Women’s Basketball Roundup | 4th-ranked Maryland beats No. 6 Sooners

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Marissa Coleman had 20 points and 12 rebounds and No. 4 Maryland beat No. 6 Oklahoma 76-66 Sunday night in the State Farm Tip-Off Classic.

Laura Harper added 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Terrapins (2-0), who shot nearly 46 percent, led by 24 and took command by outscoring the Sooners 30-9 during the final 12 minutes of the first half.

Ashley Paris scored 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting and Danielle Robinson added 15 points for the Sooners (0-1), who made the score respectable by outscoring Maryland 13-1 during the final 2:09.

And in a matchup of All-Americans Courtney Paris and Crystal Langhorne, it was the supporting players who put up the biggest numbers.

Kristi Toliver had 16 points and Marah Strickland added 14 for Maryland, which outrebounded the Sooners 43-32 and kept Oklahoma without a field goal for a 5-minute, 40-second stretch of the first half.

Courtney Paris, last year’s Associated Press player of the year, finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds, extending her NCAA-record streak of games with double figures in both categories to 62.

At No. 1 Tennessee 76, Chattanooga 56

Candace Parker scored 23 points and had five steals, and the Vols opened the season with a win over Chattanooga. Tennessee won its opener for the eighth straight year and improved to 31-3 in openers under coach Pat Summitt.

Laura Hall led Chattanooga with 15 points.

At No. 2 Connecticut 98, Stony Brook 35

Freshman Maya Moore had 21 points and 10 rebounds in her college debut, leading the Huskies in their season opener.

Mel Thomas also scored 21, including five three-pointers for UConn, which has won its last 199 home games against unranked teams.

Dana Ferraro had 15 points and nine rebounds for the Seawolves (1-1).

At No. 5 Louisiana State 73, Texas Christian 54

Sylvia Fowles had 16 points and six rebounds to lead the Tigers (2-0) over the Frogs (1-1) in the second round of the Preseason WNIT.

TCU led by as many as nine points in the first half, but LSU used scoring runs of 8-0 and 13-0 to build a 14-point lead with 3:27 left in the half.

At No. 9 Georgia 84, George Mason 56

Tasha Humphrey dominated the inside with 21 points and Ashley Houts controlled the perimeter with 17 points and seven steals to lead the Bulldogs (2-0) over the Patriots (0-1).

No. 10 Duke 57, at Denver 37

Abby Waner scored 16 points and the Blue Devils used a 19-0 run in the second half to pull away from Denver.

Waner, from suburban Denver, had two three-pointers as Duke turned a 29-25 deficit into a 44-29 lead.

Joy Cheek added 11 points in the Blue Devils’ season opener and first game under coach Joanne P. McCallie, who replaced Gail Goestenkors, who left Duke to coach at Texas.

At Eastern Washington 63, Montana Tech 48

Junior guard Katy Baker of Spokane scored 18 points and freshman guard Kyla Evans of Brewster added 17 as the Eagles opened their season with a victory before 720 fans. Nicole Scott added 10 points for Eastern.
